Jody Shelley was hit in the face with a puck during the Flyers’ practice on Monday. He will undergo surgery to repair his left orbital bone on Thursday that will keep him out of the lineup for about a month.
A month from now puts his return date around the end of the first round of the playoffs, give or take.
For all intents and purposes, Shelley’s season is done.
If the Flyers do move on past the first round, Laviolette is not going to interrupt his lineup by reinserting a recovering Shelley.
In his place will be Dan Carcillo and Andreas Nodl, most likely. Nikolay Zherdev could always make an appearance, as well.
Shelley’s big body presence will be missed, but his role as an energy player and even enforcer can be filled without much interruption – Dan Carcillo fits the bill pretty well, though perhaps a bit undersized.
For the most part, though, things will continue on as normal, as the Flyers prepare for the final stretch into the playoffs.
Flyers recall Syvret
In other news, the Flyers have recalled AHL defenseman Danny Syvret – who played with the Flyers last year – to replace the recently-sent-down Erik Gustafsson.
Since Pronger’s injury, the Flyers have switched between Gustafsson and Boynton as sixth defenseman.
It’s hard to say whether they continue as they had, switching between Boynton and Syvret now, or try something new and perhaps insert both and give the aging Sean O’Donnell a rest with only a few weeks remaining.
