UPDATE: The AP reports that the deal is in fact for $8.85 million, with a $5-million club option for 2013 with a $500,000 buyout.
The Phillies took care of their final arbitration-eligible free agent today, signing Carlos Ruiz to a three-year $9 million contract, according to CSNPhilly.com’s Jim Salisbury.
The 31-year old catcher hit .255 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in 107 games last year. The deal is contingent on a physical and should be announced early this week, Salisbury reports.
The signing of Ruiz means the Phillies have avoided arbitration with all four eligible players- Chad Durbin, Joe Blanton, Shane Victorino, and now, reportedly, Ruiz.
The backstop has earned the respect of Philly fans for his clutch hitting and tough catching over the last few seasons. He will now be behind the plate for three more years.
