Joe Blanton has agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal, avoiding arbitration, confirms general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr.
Entering the off-season, the Phillies had four arbitration eligible players, but have cut the number back to two, after signing Chad Durbin earlier this week, and then Blanton today. According to assistant general manager Scott Proefrock, the team plans on extending Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz as well, to avoid arbitration.
Blanton, who went 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA in 2009 is a notorious innings eater and should play a key role, not only this season, but in the long term certainty of the rotation.
