NLCS game three preview

The Phillies lost Game 2 of the NLCS to the Dodgers, 2-1, in Los Angeles. After a brilliant effort by starter Pedro Martinez , who pitched seven scoreless innings in his first playoff appearance with the Phillies and left with a 1-0 lead, the Phils fell apart on all cylinders. The Dodgers scored two off five Phils pitchers, aided by a crucial overthrow on a routine double play ball by Chase Utley.

Cliff Lee (1-0) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (0-0)

Kuroda: It’s been nearly three weeks since Kuroda has pitched a Major-League game, but after proving to the Dodgers’ training staff that the herniated disk in his neck was healed enough to make the NLCS roster, management decided he’d be the best bet to take the ball for game three at the hostile, electric Citizens Bank Park. Kuroda will attempt to put LA up 2-1 tonight.

Notables against Kuroda: Rollins (0-6), Howard (0-8), Werth, Utley (2-7)

Lee: Despite having nearly no experience in October baseball, and showing signs of fatigue throughout September, the Phillies chose to give the ball to Lee in game one of the NLDS and he did not disappoint. Lee went the distance pitching a complete game and leading his Phils to a game one victory. The Phils went back to him for game four, hoping to wrap things up and advance to the NLCS without having to return to Philly. Again, Lee delivered. He allowed just one earned run in a no-decision, en route to a Phillies’ clinching victory. He hopes to continue his postseason heroics tonight.

Notables against Lee: Mientkiewicz (5-12), Ramirez (6-14), Thome (5-24), Castro (2-11)
